Canberra, die Hauptstadt Australiens liegt ca. 300 km südwestlich von Sydney im inneren des Kontinents. Der Ort wurde gewählt um die Rivalität zwischen Sydney und Melbourne zu stoppen. Am Anfang war Canberra nur eine Schaffarm am Mologlo Fluss. Der amerikanische Architekt Walter Burley Griffin wurde beauftragt eine flache, ausgedehnte und moderne Hauptstadt rund um einen See zu entwerfen. Canberra ist ein Aboriginal Wort und heisst „Versammlungsort“. Die Stadt ist rund um den Capital Circle angelegt. Grosszügig angelegt Stassen treffen Sternförmig am Capital Hill , Sitz des Parlaments und Senats und der gesammten Regierung, zusammen. Der Regierungssitz ist auf einem Hügel mit Sicht auf den See und die umliegenden Hügel. A propos „Hügel“, alles was mehr als 20 m aus der Ebene ragt wird als Hügel bezeichnet...........

After winning the competition in the early 1900's Griffin set out to outline a generous city around a large lake, later named „Lake Burly Griffin“. The example was Versaille. The city should showcase lakes, alley ways and terrasses leading up to the paliament house. 1913 the first work started, butc until 1921 not much was achieved. The peace between the city government and the architect didn't last long. They could agree on the size of the lake, Griffin wanted a much larger one than exists today. They actually finished the city in 1964, as it is today. Griffin was asked to be consult, but he refused.

The parliamentary triangle is „Capital Hill“ - „City Hill“ - „ Australian-American Memorial“ is housing the most prominent memorials, Governement buildings and sight-seeing places. In 1927 the „old parliament house“ was opened, Canberra being a small village and sheep station at the time. There are lots of places to visit. We wanted to experience Canberra on foot – doing an other 10K m trail. We decided on the National Museum of Australia. A very interesting place, depicting the early settlers as well as problems they had to overcome. Also their involvement in the 2 world wars is shown. A visit worth our while.

Then on foot to the Capital Hill. It is a modern building and seems quite recent. They have the same political system as the English. Actually everything seems leaning toward the English Culture. From the roof of the buildung you can admire the views and you can see the idea of the layout. The Australians even copied our Geneva fountain............

Pebbly Beach is advertized as „colony of kangaroos, cooling down in the sea“ so we went there – a little out of our way. Nice beach but no kangaroos at all. They were supposed to have a swim in the sea, perhaps not warm enough for them. So we headed into the mountains towards Canberra. The mountains are covered with trees and there are no views. An hour worth of trees for you. After reaching the hights, there is a plateau leading to the capital. More cows and sheep. The soil and climate are not allowing more than that, I guess.

La meilleur solution pour chercher une chambre pour la nuit sont les bureaux d'information. Toujour plein d'information et de solutions. Ils nous ont trouvé une chambre sur la site du Yowani Country Club de Canberra. Nous n'avons pas pu resister un entraînement de 9 trous. Joli vieu parcours parmi les arbres. P.S. Pas perdu une balle – avons utilisé la tête et moins le coeur.

Continued our travel North along the Sapphire Coast. Mostly travelling on HWA 1 and 8/9, using the scenic drives. Windy road through the back-country. Mostly farms and small villages. One calles Tilba Central. A cheese factory and some small shops and one who advertized „Look no more, you have found Pam's Store“. It takes you back years. It feels like being back in your childhood in a small village in Switzerland (ex. Stammheim/(ZH – 1957). Villages like Merimbula, Pambula Beach, Tathra, Bermagui and Batemans Bay are weekend and holiday destinations for Canberrans – just about 2 hours drive away.

Nous nous sommes de nouveau arrêté pour nour entraîné. A côté de la plage le golf de Narooma. Un 18 trous dont les premiers 9 sont situé côté mèr, les 2ème 9 sont dans la forêt. Les vues des fairways sont à comparer avec les vue du Balesteros à Crans-sur-Sierre. Nous avons pri un green fee pour 6 trous – tous avec vue sur la mèr (jouer pour 2, location de clubs et charriots plus 2 coupon pour un boissons au clubhouse = 40 AU$ pour les deux).

Die „Great Dividing Range“ erstreckt sich von den Blue Mountains bis zu den Snowy Mountains. Diese Bergkette teilt die Region in 3: A) Küste mit Sandstränden beginnend in Wollongong, B) Bergkette, C) Farmland beim Fluss „Murrumbidgee River“. Bei Eden z.B. Lassen sich im Twofold Bay Wale beobachten. Beste Zeit September – November.

Weather: started out cloudy, but improved during the day. About 20°C in the afternoon.

We are bordering the Tasman Sea again – remember the blog from the West Coast of NZ? Franz-Josef and Milford Sound! With a bit of luck you might see accross, probable when you have a Föhn-situation.........

From East Gibbsland we entered New South Wales. We travelled North on the Princes HWY, crossing the Tambo River where they had severe floods distroying road and bridges. Some campers and backpackers had to be rescued by helicopter. We also noticed the roads had been damaged by the rain. A local said: „our roads are not constructed as they should, usually its a quick fix“ We passed one of these quick fixes. 2 miles of slush at 40 km/h and your car is halfway covered by a thick paste of water/sand. It took me a while to get all this off with the pressure hose.

The area is covered with National Parks (Alpine Ntl Pk or Kosciuszko Ntl Pk or South East Forest Ntl Pk, to mention just a few). A real heaven if you like to hike and go places you are alone. Plenty of trees to look at...... The rain forest is very dense and cumbersome to pass............not for us we stick to the HWY and to our 4-legged rental car. Mind you we don't want to know the snakes either. Chris is thinking more of spiders.......so we are playing it safe.

A Merimbula il y en a beaucoup de petits restaurants, le pluspart bon marché mais aussi une qualité bon marché. Il est très difficile pour trouver un restaurant à un prix moyenne – soit on trouve 30-40 AU$ ou 10 AU$. Selon l'information touristique il y en a 3-4 restaurants de bonne qualité. Malheureusement il faut conduire pour y aller. Ca pourrait poser de problèmes. La police locale aime faire de contrôles. C'est très facile. Avec un policier on peut bloquer toute la ciruculation à travers du village. La route principale doit passer un pont. Et c'est là, qu'ils organisent de contrtôle 100%. Tout le monde y passe. Apparemment ils sont très sévère. Il te peut arriver que t'est contrôlé 4 x par jour..............à chaque x tu passes le pont. Nous avons décidé d'aller dîner à pied, parce que le vin est bon et nous ne pouvons pas resister.

Wir haben eine Besonderheit der Natur beobachtet. Es gibt Bäume, die im Herbst nicht die Blätterr verlieren, sondern die Rinde des Stammes schälen. Es sieht komisch aus wenn ganze Waldbestände lange Stücke Rinde runterhängen haben. Zuerst meinte ich, dass sie ein Problem hätten. Dem ist nicht so, alles hat seine Richtigkeit. Natürlich gibt es Baumarten wie bei uns, die verlieren dann die Blätter im März/April.

Hier in Merimbula herscht das ganze Jahr eine mittlere Temperatur um die 20-25°C. Natürlich war 2011 ein verrücktes Jahr......heiss und schwül. Hier können sie auch auf Wochenendbesuche der Bewohner von Canberra zählen und es gibt keine richtige Saison ohne Touristen. Das ganze Dorf ist darauf ausgerichtet. Der Häusermarkt bzw. der Wohnungsmarkt offeriert Häuser im Wert von 250'000 AU$ oder Häuser in bester Lage bis 2.2 Mio AU$.

Weather: rain and cool, grey day, justd right to drive about.

The area South-East of Melbourne is called „Gippsland“. Flat to the South and leading to the Australian Alps to the North. This area actually offers skiing at an altitude of up to 1800m. Because of the rain, we just cut accross to Lakes Entrance. The area is mostly agricultural – farms and wineries. Bairnsdale – established 1842 – is a nice little place with award-winning gardens in the Main Street.. In the 1860's gold was discoverd. They also boast the hand-painted ceiling of St. Mary's Catholic Church (not accessible to us because of a funeral service, pictures look nice).

Lakes Entrance est le départ pour des sorties en bateau dans les laques derrière la plage de env. 140 km. Ces laques sont fournis d'eau par 4 rivières. A l'entrée ont peut aussi sortir à la Tasman Sea/Bass Strait. Apparemment les été sont tempéré et les hivers moins froid que le reste de Victoria. Nous avons du au milieu de leur hivers au début de leur automn. L'endroit doit être visité quand il y en a du grand soleil. Une nuit ici suffit, nous ne sommes pas trop enchanté de notre visite.

Reisen in Australien ist eigentlich einfach, man benötigt nicht unbedingt grosse Englischkenntnisse. Auch Christine und ich haben hie und da Mühe mit dem australischen Slang. Nicht immer einfach zu verstehen. In grösseren Orten können die Hotels per Internet gebucht werden (z.b. Mit der Internetadresse http://www.booking.com/ oder http://www.hotel.de/ ) An kleineren Orten kann man ausserhalb der Hauptsaison einfach mal eine Runde drehen und das Beste aussuchen. Man muss aber immer aufpassen, dass man nicht an speziellen Anlässen in diese Region reist. Es kann dann passieren, dass es keinen Platz mehr gibt oder nur noch teure Zimmer zur Verfügung stehen. Es gilt also die Veranstaltungen der Zielorte abzurufen.

Weather: drizzle on and off all day, a typical grey day and cool at that.

After our parking chock of yesterday's parking fee, we are using the trains and trams today. Actually they have a good system. Free trams and buses are available to anybody. Having our hotel in the suburbs, we have chosen a day ticket off peaktimes for 10.20 AU$ per person. We can use the ticket all day on any means of transportation.

Do you know where the name for the river Yarra comes from? Apparently the first settlers asked the Aboriginals and they replied „yarrayarra“ actually meaning „the river that always flows“. It is one of the few rivers that never dry out. The Yarra River has caused some havoc in the past. After heavy rainfalls it rose about 10 m covering the bridges. Its not imaginable actually when you see the riverbank (date inknown to me).

Bottle shops are very popular in Australia. There are even drive through ones (system McDonald). Many restaurants also accept „BYO“, which offers considerable savings.

The shops/supermarkets have a funny system. Many prices are marked xx.99 AU$, but at the checkout the amount is always rounded – ex. 9.99 = you pay 10.00. They all accept the system and don't even know where it comes from.

Une journée blanche au ski n'est pas trop agréable, même chose en ville quand il pleu toute la journée. Aujourd'hui était un jour de shopping. Nous avons fait tous les magasin par manque d'alternative. Visiter les jardins et le port ne faisait pas trop de plaisir. Nous avons bien profité des transports publiques – 10.20 AU$ par journée par personne. Nous avons eu un hotel à Box Hill, ça nous donnais un trajet de env. 40 min. Le matin le train était vide, mais le soir à 2100h tous plein.

Das Internet ist billiger, wenn man die Hotspots der Restaurants benützt. Z.B. Starbucks hat einen Hotspot. Für 3 AU$ kann man eine Stunde üben Blogs zu verfassen (das Hotel wollte 20 AU$ die Nacht). Leider sind diese Möglichkeiten rar. Auf dem Land ist man auf die Hotspots der Restaurants angewiesen.

Christine hat die Outlets besucht, leider oder zum Glück für unser Bankkonto hat sie nichts gefunden.

Dafür haben wir beim Abendessen zugeschlagen. Unser Gastgeber war ein Italo-Aegypter, der mit seiner Familie beim Nasser Coup ausgewandert ist. Seine Familie ist auf alle Kontinente verteilt worden. In der Hardware Lane gibt es 8 Restaurants. Wir haben dieses Restaurant aufgrund der interessanten Diskussion mit dem Gastgeber gewählt, denn die anderen scheinen junge Leute ohne Ausstrahlung angestellt zu haben. Unser Restaurant war voll und die anderen praktisch leer. Unser John-Dury Fisch (ein Salzwasserfisch) war exzellent gekocht. Die Internetadresse lautet http://www.grillsteakseafood.com.au/. Weather: real nice and sunny automn day, up to 24°C

On our way to Melbourne we passed the small town of Geelong. Clean town without the habitual cheap shops and fast food places along the sea front. Could live here. Acutally a teacher of Christine's school days came from here.

30 km out you can see Melbourne's skyline coming up in the automn mist. Not as impressive as Sydney's, but still noticable. The founder of the city was John Batman – the son of a Sydney convict. 1835 only a tent city existed, but quickly developed into world renown city, this in just about 20 years. The growth was based on the immigrants trying to make their money in the gold mines of Victoria. At the end of the 19^th century – the end of the boom days - it was the industrial and financial center Australia's, and the capital too. 1956 they hosted the Olympic Games.

Naturellement nous avons voulu stationner notre voiture au centre de la ville. Facile à trouver un parking payant. A l'entrée il y avait un signe „15 Dollar pour la journée“. A la sortie nous avons eu un choc. Nous avons du payer 53 Dollar pour 3 heures. Les 15$ sont pour ceux qui arrivent tôt et partent tard. Alors pas diner aujourd'hui!

En route nous avons toujour vu des vignobles. Je pense qu'on est jamais loin d'un vignoble et des caves ici au sud de l'Australie. Pas ci extensif que Barossa Valley, mais toujour présent.

Melbourne offeriert viele Sehenswürdigkeiten, die einen längeren Aufenthalt rechtfertigen könnten. Heute – weil es sonnig war und die Vorhersagen eher schlecht – haben wir eine Flussfahrt auf dem „Yarra“ mitgemacht. Auf der einen Seite die Gärten und Luxusbehausungen und auf der anderen Seite die Sportstätten. Das Rod Laver Tennis Stadion z. Beispiel. Wir waren überrascht, dass das Stadion praktisch im Stadtzentrum liegt – 10 min zu Fuss.

Die Skyline Melbourne's offeriert eine Mischung aus alten Gebäuden – z.B. Flinders Bahnstation – und neuen Hochhäusern – z.B. Rialto Tower. Obwohl die Parkgebühren exorbitant hoch sind, sind die Strassen voll und das Vorwärtskommen ist zeitaufwendig. Eine interessante Variante des Rechtsabbiegens haben wir hier kennengelernt. Nicht einfach rechts abbiegen, sondern rechts ausholen (und die Geradeausfahrer rechts vorbeilassen) und auf „Grün“ warten. Als Schweizer habe ich zwar rechts ausgeholt (das hatte ich noch begriffen) und dann stand ich auf einmal mitten auf den Tramgeleisen und musste den Gegenverkehr abwarten. Kopfschütteln und Hupkonzert waren mir sicher. Werden das Auto morgen stehen lassen und die Bahn nutzen.
