24.2.2011 Cairns - Port Douglas - Tablelands

 Weather: tropical rain showers but still 26-28°C, rain on and off

Our hotel "The Cairns Hotel" provided us with a Smart to explore the area. When it pours, it pours. Within a few minutes the roads were turned into mini rivers. Due to the tropical rain showers we limited our outing somewhat. From Cairns we drove up the Captain Cook Hwy to port Douglas, then headed towards the Tablelands - a area at about 440 m above sealevel. It is a fruit growing area. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fruit_Bats . These bats are much bigger and congregate in Cairns CBD.

Port Douglas is a quaint little tourist center with lots of little shops to explore.

The Barron Falls are impressive. The Barron River drops from about 300 m a.SL to 100 m a.SL. Quite impressive even in the clouds and the rain.

Nous avons su quer le temps de pluie est pendant les mois de février et mars. Mais nous sommes surpris que la température ne descende pas trop, c'est plustôt agréable. Conduire pourrait produire des problèmes, parce que l'eau traverse la route à une profendeur de 20-40 cm. Les Australien produisent de vin pas seulement de raisin mais aussi de Mango. Nous n'avons pas essayé, Mango me semble trop sucré.

Notre hôtel offre un repas comme la charbonnade. Ils utilisent un rocher de lava - pas de fourneau - chauffé à env. 400 °C. Le plat "Aussi Rock" est servi avec viande de crocodile, emu et kangoroo. Pas mal du tous.

Beim Ueberlandfahren wird einem klar wie gross Australien wirklich ist. Von der Ost- zur Westküste sind es ca. 3800 km (im Vergleich USA - ca. 4200 km). Die Distanzen sind enorm. Nicht zu sprechen von den klimatischen Unterschieden zw. Ost und West. Ost z.B. Cairns: praktisch immer schön warm, auch in der Regenzeit von Februar/März. West z.B. Perth eher trocken mit verhältnismässig grossen Tempeaturunterschiedn währen den Saisons.
