Weather: nice day with clouds, but the deep blue sky was missing for better pictures. According to the boat's skipper "a beautiful day (the average rain fall is about 6000 mm / year)
It was an early start in Queenstown again (2 toilets/showers for about 50-60 campers, so we decided to have a dry clean). Driving to the Fijordland the landscape changed again to rain forest (from southern alps with scarce vegetation). Milford Sound is the only sound accessible by "normal" road". The access is via Te Anau. Fiordland National Park is 1.25 million hectares and is a designated World Heritage (1986).
The narrow windy road snuggels itself to the steep mountain side. The cool temperate rainforest is jungle dense and complete with vines, climbers, perching plants and ferns. In Chasm you can find "rimu" - a podocarp tree, which can grow up to 50 m, have dark brown, flakey bark and weeping/drooping foilage.
Des avalanches peuvent descendre juqu'à l'eau, enlevant les arbres. Souvent il y en a aussi des avalances d'arbres, soit des plaques de rocher et arbres descendent. Les arbres ne semblent pas avoir de racines profondes. On peut voir des arbres tombés, dont la profondeur de terre est uniquement 50cm. Pendant la saison de pluie l'arbre et la terre peuvent devenir trôp lourd pour être supporter par les racines.
Der Milford Sound (Maori: Piopiotahi) wurde - gemäss der Legende - von IWI Maori vor über 1000 Jahren entdeckt. Die Wasserwege waren ihre Hauptreiseart. Wie üblich war auch Captain Cook in der Gegend (1770). Er glaubte aber, dass hinter dem Eingang nicht mehr sei. Captain John Grono war der erste Robbenjäger, der in der Gegend operierte. Der Milfort Weg wurde vom Schotten Donald Sutherland eingeweit. Der Milford Sound wird nur durch die heutige 2-spurige Strasse, welche durch das holprige Homer Tunnel (Bau 1930-12954) erreicht. Dieses Tunnel würde in der Schweiz nie homologiert.
